I've been reading the rumor site (www.HockeyTradeRumors.com), the online magazines (www.theFourthPeriod.com) and the NHL, TSN, and SportsNet sites daily.

Watching hockey you come across some wacky names. No other sport is as European or Russian based, so the last names are often new and exciting. The other day we tried to design a line that'd we'd love the announcers to have to call. Here is what we came up with.

Janne Niinimaa, Joe Nieuwendyk, Scott Niedermayer, Rob Niedermayer, and Teppo Numminen.

Just imagine a good passing play. Ninnimaa to Neidermayer, Neidermayer skates past the line, up to Numminen who dumps it in. Nueidermayer races behind the net and steals the puck. Circles around and throws it out front to Nieuwendyk, who hits the post.

Also their goalie will be Antero Niittymaki

To end, I have a complaint. I don't like the Leafs (or Laffs cause they suck), yet that's all I can watch on TV. It sucks. TSN carries 10 or so Habs games, and CBC some too. But I want more. I want RDS (French TSN). They play all 82 games this year, and all the playoff games. Even the TSN show is called TSN Molson Canadian Leafs Hockey. The Beer than the habs are named after (according to my grade 10 geography teacher) sponsors a show about the Leafs. CBC plays mostly leafs games. TSN does too, and for some reason, we are in Senators country for Sportsnet. Even if most are 1 liners, it's still an accomplishment.

Has anyone else noticed that Gmail's Spam folder has links to recipies using Spam. I found that today and was quite ammused.

OK. General update time.

Job is going well. They offered me a full time position after only half my contract was up. It's nice to have security and have my taxes done. My independent contractor days are over for now.

Trip to Ottawa was fun. Got to see Carley and her friends, as they were at the U2 concert. I have seen more of her this year, (grad, thanksgiving, Ottawa twice and soon Christmas) than any in the last few, so that's nice. I spend most of my time doing nothing, but still got some records and some Christmas shopping done.

I also got to see the last Question Period of this House sitting, as well as the actual vote of no confidence, thanks to Mom and her connections at Parliment Hill. Question Period was quite the spectacle.

Also, as an early Birthday gift, Mom, Dad, and I went to the Ottawa Senators v Montreal Canadiens game. It is always good to see the Habs, but they got slaughtered that night. In their defence, they were without 3 of their 5 best players, and had 2 rookie defence, including one who was in his first game. Also, Ottawa is way too good.

Mom got called down to PEI for work, so she got booked on my flights. It was fun to have a travel friend. She helped me rearange my furniture in the fanily room. I really like it now. She should have a decoratting show.

We got word the other day that we have Dec 24th to Jan 3rd off from work, and I will be in Halifax from the 23rd to the 26th. Hopefully we'll be back early enough that all my friends can come celebrate my being born that night. Plans will be made sometime.

This update went on longer than I thought.

Now I can begin putting off the next one.

Dental Plan

Check out Sportsnet (ch. 59) on Tuesday. During a recent episode of the Daily Show, Jon Stweart had a guest whose father was in the CIA, and had done all sorts of interesting, but classified things. He couldn't tell his own son what he did. Years later this kid grows up to be an investigative journalist, and decides to research his dad. His book, My Father The Spy, is the result of that research. Seeing this really got me thinking.

I have never met him, nor will I have the chance. He died well before I was born, and my grandmother had remarried before I was around. I have, through my life, gotten some stories about him. He seemed like an incredible man. He was a doctor in Eldon, PEI and Halifax. If any of you faithful readers have family from Pownal to Wood Islands, they might remember him. He was the man who taught my dad. He was lots of things to lots of people. And to me, he is stories.

I want to know more about him. Even after hearing some stories 20 times, I don't remember them. I don't remember them, because I don't have a full picture of what he was like. I have many questions that I now want answered. Next time I see my father, I am going to ask him about Dr John(I also have the same name as him, Jo(h)n M Gillis). Next time I see my Grammy, I will ask her about him. I don't want to get a sugar coated version either. I want to know it all.

Are there any others out there who feel a strong desire to know about family they never met. I have much less desire to learn my Mom's parents history. I think this is cause they were around in my childhood, so I have memories of them. I knew them, and miss them. With John, it is not about missing him, it is about getting to know him.

Silence Restored

I finally found the source of the god damn squeaking. Sometimes they have venison or smoked meats, and maybe a little bit of wine, while sometimes the bread is stale and the cheese mouldy, it can go either way. But they always have some form of cheese and bread with a meal. I at first thought this to be terrible, eating the same meal of cheese and bread every day, then realized I had made the statement that I would love to eat bread and cheese every day earlier that same day.

Dinner rolls and a processed cheese slice just might be my favourite "snack" food ever. They are the Bacon Mushroom Melts of foods I can make at home. I have them so rarely, but I love them so. My parents, vacationning from Ottawa, left some here and I have been endulging. I really thought I 'd be able to talk about rolls and cheese more, but I guess that it is not a good enough subject to make a full solid post about.

abort post

Peter Griffin Lives

Trivia was the event of last night. Bob, Brent, Carolyn, Tyler and I got there a few minutes late, and had to sit in the alley. This is important later. After the heat of yesterday, the cool alley was beautiful. We got caught up with the questions, picked a team name, and enjoyed the beer. After a pretty disappointing first round (4.5/11) we got a great comment from inside. Laughter erupted from the inside croud and cheers from our table, as trivia guy yells out, "Are you guys Goblin Nuts out on the deck?" This was preceded by Bob getting a new entendre(sp) for Goblin Nuts, making it an unprecedented "Quadruple Entendre". Since we had no chance to win, we decided to get some joke answers such as Goat's Mom, and the like. Unfortunatly, we made one mistake. When asked What scientist was offered the prime misters office of Israel in the 50's. Einstein was the only 50's scientist we could think of, so we put it down. This seemed too odd an answer so we thought of other scientist, and all we could come up with is "Batman's a scientist!!!" Well, the right answer is Einstein, but trivia got a good laugh.

That concludes this little story.

In grade 4, on a really hot and sunny day, probably one like today, Dorian Locke wore pants to school for some reason. It was really hot(still) and just as we were going outside for recess, Evan Charles and I saw that Dorian was cutting the legs off his sweatpants to make them into totally sweet shorts. We, being smart guys, waited til he had one leg fully cut before asking, "Que faites-vous?", so that the teacher would hear. She looked at him, a known troublemaker, and made him stop right then and there. He then had to spend the rest of the day in one leg short and one regular gym pants.

I am still proud of that to this day.

Ottawa Bluesfest, Day 2 review.

Day 2 gets no review. After reading the list of the headlining bands, you would find it odd they called it a blues show. k-os, Black Eyed Peas, Kid Rock, WAR, and ZZ Top aren't exactly who I imagined would be here, but that is out of my control and beyond the point.

After a late afternoon flight to Montreal, and a rush back home to get to the concert on time, we got our passes, a nice rubber green bracelet I have to wear for the next 4 days, and 10 day yellow ones for Mom and Sis. WAR was the only band we had time to see tonight, but I am really glad we got to see them. I knew a few WAR songs, Lowrider, Cisco Kid, Spill the Wine, but not many so this was a pretty new experience. We had already missed the first few songs by the time we got there, but as we got close they were getting a little political, covering Edwin Starr's War. As we found a good spot on the pavement, the band was moving through it's catalogue, going from all out funk, to slow love songs "dedicated to all the ladies" to some unexpected guitar solos. The crowd was split around 50-50 between young and old, with the older people seeming to know all the words to most songs. As the night went on, the energy grew and so did the hits. Starting with Gypsy Man, they pumped out their hits, and had the crowd in the palm of their hands. Why Can't We Be Friends? got the whole lot of us singing along, followed by a 25 minute version of Lowrider complete with band introductions and each band members own song to showcase themselves. The drummer playing 30 seconds of Iron Man, much to my delight, the bassist playing some Cream, the ultra bluesy harmonica solo and the "sex-aphone" solo were the highlights of that. This was followed by a encore of 2 songs I didn't know.

All in all, the general consensus from the departing crowd was that it was better than expected, and I agree. The whole band played very well. They took the most of the opportunity to open a long festival like this, and made a new fan out of me at least.

On the lineup today.

Black Eyed Peas
Talib Kweli
Tinariwen
Neko Case

Never heard of most of the other people, but who cares. Free(to me) music is always good. Plus I can go try and meet some Ottawa ladies at the Black Eyed Peas. Just gotta practice liking that music.

Check back for more later.

Happy Canada Day To All.

And people wonder why I left the old site. For no real reason, I love wind power. I know it is clean and renewable and all that jazz, but I think that I really just like the look of windmills. They remind me of the hot tub at the CARI pool. But that is another story.

Seeing the windmill at the IWMC complex on the bypass made me wonder of how much it would cost to get a personal turbine for a house. I tried looking at how much power it can create at different wind speeds and at different sizes. This quickly got boring, so I googled to see how much it would cost to just buy a windmill, and not care about the amount of energy it can produce. Small, a relative term, turbines can easily make enough juice to run a house, with the proper amount of wind. If you kept your connection to Maritime Electric or even better, got a giant battery/generator, you could do your small part to help the world. In some places in North America the local gevernments give tax breaks to companies and individuals who use wind power. It would be neat to see the Island do this, but I don't expect it will happen.

All of my research is purely for my own enjoyment, since I
a) have no house to get a windmill for
b) would never be allowed to build one because they are loud
c) cannot think of a c at this point.

Sadly, even if the whole Island went to green power(windmills, water, solar, giant hamster in wheel farms) we would still get enough polution from Quebec and Ontario to keep us from feeling too good. This is an unfortunate circumstance of living just up the breeze from polution alley(northeastern US/QC/ON). This paragraph sucks, and I have gotten bored with it.

In closing, the Earth is great. Don't fuck it up.

As some one who has been drunk and skydiving, not at the same time, I can honesyly say that this video is by fr the stupidest thing I have ever seen.
